Thread ModesMetallix here

Hello! Long time IF/ZB user here, since 2004.

A bit about me I started off making car forums, went to miscellaneous, then settled on the topic of one of my favorite childhood games/character. Who is that? Sonic the Hedgehog!

When I started my current forum there were literally hundreds of Sonic forums that used default, premade, or eye-searing skins. My goal was to have one that felt built from the ground up around my subject. With the flexibility and great community at IF/ZB I felt I created a better free hosted forum than any paid for self-hosted Forum out there. My forum eventually exploded and not only became the top Zathyus Sonic Forum but it was the most active on the web! Our top year in 2011 had over 260k posts.

But when social media started taking over there was a huge dive in activity. When Brandon announced the takeover of TT I was excited, this finally meant we’d be getting updates! Since 2013 I felt we were starting to get a bit outdated and we got a few new things in 2014 but it wasn’t enough.

Then we found out everyone was going to TT. I was disappointed but also hopeful that things would turn out decent. After giving them a fair shot I decided it wasn’t for me and moved to MyBB. Their policies are just too restraining for me and the weak CSS editor they put in wasn’t cutting it.

It has been going since April 2006. It’s still running and has a decent active user base. No where near what we once were but that’s okay with me!

I learned a lot through ZB. I’m no coder but I do understand .CSS. I don’t consider myself an advanced designer but over the years I have gotten better.

I think the design and coding community that developed around ZetaBoards is unlikely to be paralleled again. Yours is one of countless stories of people that learned from each other while building their forums.

I'm glad you found us here.

I too was hoping for the best from TaT, but also preparing for the worst. And right now, things are trending towards the worst.

Nice. What are you thoughts on the perception of the Sonic fan community lately?

Also did you forums ever notice the more infamous sonic/pokemon fan who I shall not name here? Tongue
For the most part my community didn’t have a lot of the weirdness I’ve seen in the fandom but I do realize it gets a bad rap these days. That said I think every fandom has its loonies. I’m not even aware of the fan you’re referencing. Lol I guess that’s a good thing.

We lost 1.2M posts but at the same time staring over felt liberating. Sometimes it’s good to reboot.

    Thanks Helena!

Well that is good your community didn't have the fringed element that seems a bit common today.

What's ironic is I still use Tapatalk. I installed the plugin for my forum as a secondary option for mobile support.

I just couldn't accept the restrictive customization and while certain features are "grandfathered" I don't support their use of putting standard features behind a paywall for other users. Like give a good reason to pay for premium at least!

I mean we did have stuff like drama and very bad fan characters that were just recolored sprites. lol But we didn't have anything like Passion Sonic or Sonic Cult. *shudders*

Oh man Sonic Passion. I have some first hand gossip from that place. But comparing it to Sonichu is a lil bit like apples to oranges.

Anyway I've almost certainly seen/joined your old forum at one point, since I ran or helped run LOOOOTS of Sonic forums in the 2000s and I networked like crazy, but because of that, I would not be able to remember a single detail. XD
